UPP MANAGEMENT TEAM
Patricia O’Neill, Founder and President
Patty is credited by her advertising agency colleagues for having pioneered Internet marketing at DDB Digital Chicago in 1993 in behalf of national accounts such as McDonalds, Anheuser Busch, Unilever and Discover card. Heading that division at DDB culminated ten years of administrative positions, first at FCB followed by Campbell Mithun.
Her career in advertising began after working in the fashion industry in New York and Europe, subsequent to her education at Northwestern University. Shortly after joining FBC in 1981, she was promoted to Broadcast Post-Production Supervisor and then Creative Department Personnel Director. This tenure provided Patty with the management and budgeting chops to enter the ranks of Senior Vice President, Director of Broadcast Production, to which she was elevated at Campbell Mithun in 1985.
Patty left DDB in 1999 to devote time to raising her twin boys, Huston and Wyatt and develop a new business venture. Things happened quickly for her. She was appointed Senior VP, Partner, of the Harris Realty Group which allowed her the financial freedom to pursue the course she has always aspired to follow.
As Chief Executive Officer of UPP, she brings her extensive experience and success as well as relentless energy to developing the world’s leading website for Peace. Patty’s effectiveness in strategic planning will serve her well in guiding the operations of UPP, expanding revenue generation, garnering board of directors, and establishing productive partnerships with coinciding enterprises.
“Our focus is on enabling and empowering the community whose focus is on non-violent solutions and positive social change.”
Richard “Dickie” Harris, Network Creative Director
Dickie began his career at Leo Burnett Advertising as a writer where he soon became Creative Director of many of the agency’s prize accounts. After winning several Clio awards for writing TV commercials, Dickie struck out on his own as an entertainment management company and playwright. His artists went on to Broadway success while his works were performed at the St. Nicholas, Steppenwolf, Organic and Goodman theaters in Chicago, as well as the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Two screenplays and a WTTW TV project about Chicago’s first woman alderman also emerged as a career tangent.
Dickie spent a majority of the next 13 as Group Creative Director at DDB and Ogilvy & Mather. In 1993, he left to operate a creative marketing consulting business which currently focuses on pro bono assignments. When asked how he got involved in so many different professions, Dickie replies, “What else could I do with an undergraduate degree from Illinois in Botany?”
Assuming the new role of UPP’s Network Creative Director and steeped in vast collective knowledge of peoples’ psychographic wants and needs, he believes, “We need fresh thinking to do what hasn’t been done in the past. And, we need some attitude.”
Tom Hinkes, Director of Marketing
What’s evident about Tom’s analytic ability is the clarity with which he distills conclusion. Undoubtedly, this rare trait evolved during years of service with the Keebler Company that saw Tom rise from Regional Marketing Manager to National Director of Marketing. Among his many accomplishments was being selected for the singular honor of representing Keebler at United Biscuit’s Strategic Management Program in London.
Tom subsequently caught the attention of Dairy Management Inc. who recruited him in 1997. As VP of Marketing, Tom guided the development of the famous “GOT MILK” campaign, not to mention helping to inspire single-serve milk-based products such as Tropicana Smoothies, Starbuck’s Frappaccino and Deans’ Chugs.
With e-commerce and new product e-tailing still in its infancy, Tom saw an opportunity to apply his energies and experience against radically different challenges. He struck out as an independent Internet Marketing consultant and found himself in immediate demand. UPP is one of the clients who came knocking on Tom’s virtual door and we’re well on the way to our initial goals thanks to his generous involvement.
As an individual never content with his last achievement, Tom has recently returned to his alma mater, Northwestern, to earn a MBA from the Kellogg School of Management.
UPP looks forward to enjoying the superior enhancements to Tom’s already impressive resume’.
“The concept of a lone voice being able to defy the militant abuses of power is what makes the Internet our most profound tool.”
CONSULTANTS and IN-KIND SERVICES to UNIVERSAL PEACE PLAN®
UPP proudly acknowledges and salutes the support of:
The Aisling Group LLC, who provide organizational solutions in accounting, technology, and program services that align management of daily issues with long –range vision.
Janet Shea, Financial Services
The world of numbers so essential to business success would indeed be dull without Janet. Not only has her resourcefulness in accounting and finance raised our project off the drawing board, but her operational and administrative strengths promise continued propulsion.
Janet along with Co-principal Robin Shukle, forms the nerve center of the Aisling Group LLC that technologically mentors fledgling growth companies and non-for-profits. And like Robin, Janet’s experience is deep and distinguished.
After earning her Bachelors of Accounting from the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, Janet oversaw the accounting department at Nevamar Corporation in Odenton. She supplemented her degree with an MBA from Loyola College of Baltimore in 1994.
When Nevamar was acquired by International Paper, a Fortune 10 corporation, Janet was promoted to Controller of the Masonite Division Research Facility and transferred to Chicago. While performing the duties of Controller, Janet spearheaded the implementation of the SAP system for the facility.
After a 10-year career with Nevamar/International Paper, Janet sought to utilize her skills for a more altruistic purpose and accepted a position as the Chief Financial Officer for Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago.
After her tenure at Howard Brown Health Center, Janet founded The Aisling Group in order to mentor non-for-profit organization and small commercial enterprises.
Janet’s career model purports how conscientious preparation commands destiny. UPP is eager for her to deploy that formula in our behalf and embellish our mission with solid fiscal management.
Robin Shukle, Not-for-Profit Technology Advisor
It would be remiss to acknowledge Robin’s ingenuity without mentioning the humility that accompanies it. She has steadily and without fanfare ushered UPP through the sensitive obstacles of development. Drawing on 22 years of experience at securing strategic objectives for clients with effective technology and infrastructure programs, architectures, operations, methodologies and applications across a broad range of commerce, Robin exemplifies that special talent for marrying strategy and implementation.
Examples of her successes highlight the non-for-profit activities of the Aisling Group LLC where she presently serves as principal consultant. Robin particularly distinguished Aisling competence in projects for Chicago industry consortium start-ups and a major Midwest insurance company.
Continuing to rewind Robin’s impressive resume finds her at Incent Inc. through 2001, filling the role of Chief Information Officer. As a member of Incent’s executive team reporting to the president and CEO, she fostered technology transitions for a variety of enterprises. Prior to that Robin customized infrastructures at Geodesic Systems Inc. as V.P. of Engineering and Chief Quality Officer. Earlier yet, she presided as Senior V.P. of Engineering for Advanced Health Technologies, following supervisory positions at GATX Terminals Corp., Bell and Howell, and Tenneco.
New companies hoping to catch lightening in a bottle need look no farther than Robin. UPP has witnessed the flash and is grateful to her for illuminating our future.
“How can an individual armed with only a keyboard and monitor respond to threats of aggression from forces far greater and with vast destructive capability?” Is again, the challenge, Robin poses for us.

Billie Jean Smith, Counsel-at-Large
Billie Jean is an amazing lawyer, not just because of how well she represents clients but who she represents as well. Prominent among the impressive corporations, she performs Intellectual Property services for non-for-profits such as UNIVERSAL PEACE PLAN®.
Her expertise at Michael Best and Friedrich LLP is demonstrated in preparing and implementing Intellectual Property strategies that enhance clients business goals, acquisition and enforcement of U.S. and foreign patent rights, worldwide IP licensing and technology transfers, IP portfolio management, product development counseling, and effecting U.S. and foreign registrations.
In addition, Billie Jean is a member of the Wisconsin Bar, the American Bar Association, the Association of Women Lawyers, Lex Mundi Women in Law, and an alternate for the Village of River Hills Board of Appeals. Billie Jean certainly didn’t need to add another responsibility to her schedule. But, she was gracious enough to embrace our cause and we couldn’t be better enlightened or served. Oh yes, sometime during her crowded day, she also manages the chores of wife and mother. Exhaustion is perhaps the one thing left off her agenda.
Alex Helfers, Director of Design
It’s not enough to simply declare that creative is due the upper hand on website development. You need to back it up with talent who can execute and deliver. UPP has been exceptionally fortunate to have that in abundance from Alex.
A first place winner of the Spectra 2004 B-2-B Interactive Division Award, Alex found himself highly sought after and recently accepted an Art Director position at Agency.com. His new responsibilities include web conception/design through production and implementation for business to consumer clients.
Prior to Agency.com, Alex served as Art Director of web and print design at Elrick Business Communications. His roster of Fortune 50 clients included British Petroleum, General Electric, as well as UNC Charlotte University, all of whom he worked directly in evolving highly imaginative graphic materials and Interactive identities that conformed to budget guidelines.
A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Alex was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, not to mention repeatedly making the Dean’s List. An internship at St. Louis Science Center followed where he acted as senior publication designer and conceived the summer issue of their main external newsletter.
Alex is impressive in an extensive variety of Internet languages both technologically and artistically. He enhances every aspect of sophistication, originality and, as a bonus, a collaborative spirit that helps all his colleagues shine.
